Pastor's Corner

The Cornerstone

It certainly is an exciting time to be a member of Central Christian Church. In several days we will celebrate the beginning of our new staff member, Muzetta Swann. It seems unreal to me that we have such a talented and skilled professional joining us on our journey here. I am quite sure that God has made this union possible because God is building our church. As the Minister of Music, Muzetta will provide accompaniment during worship and lead choirs for children and adults. Muzetta is very excited about beginning her ministry with us and has many creative ideas that we will soon hear about.

If a new music ministry were the only thing going on around here that would probably be enough but there is so much more. In September we will also begin a 40 Day Prayer Vigil focusing on children both here at Central and around the world. Tom Beasley is organizing an Acolyte program so that our children are always present in leadership during worship. These 40 days that we focus on children will culminate with a celebration of children during Children’s Sabbath on October 10.

There is more to celebrate about our church though. Our Youth program didn’t weaken this summer as is often the case when school is out. Out Youth program grew stronger and has grown in numbers, in spirit, and as a group. This Sunday we will have eleven teenagers leading us in worship and celebrating what it means to be church. They will also be participating in honoring our children in September and October by having a mission project that will serve the children of India.

The Handyman Ministry has become more than a dream for the Outreach Committee – it is very near a reality. The Handyman Ministry will serve the city of Springfield by offering low-income residents minor repairs to their homes. These repairs may include a handicap ramp, roofing, porch repair, yard work, etc. Tony Cowan and Marty Parker are co-coordinating this program.

We don’t often celebrate our church grounds but I want to encourage us to be very thankful for this church property we have been entrusted with. More often we only think about this property when something is wrong and needs repairs or when the size does not meet our needs. I have watched this property meet the needs of our dreams this summer in Vacation Bible School, an overnight camp-out, our youth program, creative worship services, Sunday School classes, fellowship events, etc. I celebrate this property in that it serves this community well and in that it is in good condition.

There is so much more to celebrate about our church – so many positive things going on around here – and I hope you will take the time to thank God for our opportunity to do mission and ministry here!

May God bless you on your journey!
